To get the campus ready for Christmas and all of the upcoming winter holidays, we decorated the Christmas tree! We worked elf-quick to bring you this dose of cheer in the form a time lapse video. Hope this gets you in the spirit for wassling and the festivities ahead!

If you look closely, you’ll spot “Donut Cat” on the Christmas tree displayed on Falvey Library’s first floor. “Donut Cat” was created by Shawn Proctor, Communication & Marketing Program Manager, in the Idea Lab as a way to celebrate “Falvey Library’s Semi-Annual Stress Busting Event: Donut Worry About Finals” on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 12-2 p.m. in front of Falvey’s Holy Grounds.
Fitting in beautifully with the “Wildcat” blue décor on Falvey’s tree, Proctor shared his process for making the ornament:
“Over the summer, I learned how to 3D print from Assistant Director Stephen Green. I’ve always been curious–how can someone make something and a machine creates it layer by layer? You’re only limited by the size and technical limits of the machine, but there’s an incredible number of things that can be created within those perimeters. Robots, tools, articulated slugs. Most of all, I learned 3D printing is as much art as it is science (often, a small problem completely ruins a print) but when it works…(chef’s kiss) magic.”
Interested in printing your own project? The Maker Lab (located in the Idea Lab on Falvey’s ground floor) “is equipped with a plethora of tools (3D printers, laser cutter, sewing machine, drill press, Cricut, wrenches, etc.).” Everyone is welcome in the Idea Lab and no prior 3D printing experience is required. Just stop by and the staff will assist you in bringing your idea to fruition.

It’s the holiday season! Falvey Library staff assembled the Christmas tree on the first floor yesterday. Staff (and students passing by) were able to hang ornaments on the tree and enjoy some hot chocolate and an assortment of desserts. Happy Holidays, ‘Cats! Seeing as we were unable to gather together to assemble Falvey’s Christmas tree, we thought we’d share a time-lapse video of last year’s festive fir! This week on our throwback countdown to Christmas (8 DAYS!) we’re taking it back two decades to the 1999 Christmas Tree Lighting. All of the pictures digitally archived from this event can be found here. The picture shown features singers, probably singing some classic carols in preparation for the tree lighting and the kick-off to the Christmas season.
The first thing that I think of when I think of Christmas trees is the debate of getting a real tree versus a fake tree. Growing up, we usually just had a fake tree and for the last handful of years, it’s just become a permanent fixture in our living room even though we’d redecorate it every year. Now, my husband and I go out and pick out a tree every year, and it’s become a family tradition with some of my in-laws.
Real tree or fake, nothing beats the feeling of gathering around a Christmas tree with loved ones to hang lights, put up favorite ornaments, and finally top the tree with the topper to complete the scene. What Christmas tree traditions do you have?
