TRANSLATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS—SECOND SESSION—2013

French Voices Award — Hemingway Grant — Acquisition of Rights

We are pleased to announce that the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the Institut français and FACE are now accepting applications for the second 2013 session of their translation assistance programs. The publication date of the submitted title must be scheduled after March 2014.

The Book Department of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy works with FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), the Institut français and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to promote French and Francophone literature and to encourage English translations of French fiction and non-fiction. To that effect, it provides and oversees three bi-annual programs concerning translations from French into English of works that have not yet been published in the United States. The French Voices Award, Hemingway Grants and Acquisition of Rights Grants are awarded to fiction and non-fiction translations (including children’s books, comics and digital books).

To facilitate the application process, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy offers a single online application process. By filling out a form and uploading the necessary documents, you can apply directly online to the three following programs:

French Voices Awards
The French Voices Awards honor both translators and American publishers for English translations of works that have been published in France in the last 6 years. Award recipients are selected by a literary committee. Each book receives a $6,000 award, shared by the American publisher ($4,000) and the translator ($2,000) ($5,000 and $1,000 respectively in case of a comic book or picture book).

Hemingway Grants
Hemingway Grants allow publishers to receive financial help for the translation and publication of a French work into English. Grant beneficiaries are selected by the Book Department of the French Embassy in the United States. Grants awarded for each work range from $500 to $6,000.

Acquisition of Rights Grants
The Institut français helps American publishers offset the cost of acquiring the rights to French works. Grant beneficiaries are selected by the Institut français in Paris. The amount awarded cannot exceed the amount of the advance paid to the French Publisher for the acquisition of rights and varies from 500 to 7,000 euros.

Application deadlines
The deadline for the second 2013 session is August 30th, 2013.

Results will be announced on FrenchCulture.org
The short-list for this session will be published on December 15, 2013.
Awards  will be announced on January 20, 2014. This announcement will be followed by personal letters or emails to all applicants.

For the 2006-2012 titles seeking an American publisher, a translation sample is available upon request.

Amherst, MA – The UMass Amherst Libraries will offer short-term residential fellowships to assist younger scholars in conducting research in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) in the Du Bois Library.  Full-time graduate students, faculty, or independent scholars (with a PhD) are eligible to apply.  Fellows will receive a stipend of $2,500 for a four-week residency.  The deadline for applications is April 20, 2012.  For more information:  http://bit.ly/dubois_fellowship.
Among the approximately 15,000 linear feet of manuscripts held by SCUA are many valuable collections for the study of social change in the United States, including the papers of the most important exponent of the politics and culture of the twentieth century, W.E.B. Du Bois.  Fellows may come from any field and any perspective, and they may work on any topic, but their research should explore the major themes that characterize Du Bois’s scholarship and activism. This includes the history and meaning of racial, social, and economic justice; the problems of democracy and political inclusion; the role of capitalism in world affairs; and the global influence of African cultures.
In addition to the Du Bois Papers, the UMass Amherst Libraries house over three million volumes and a rich suite of electronic resources to support advanced research in the humanities.  Comprehensive, searchable guides and finding aids to SCUA’s collections are available online at http://www.library.umass.edu/spcoll/.
Fellows will be selected on a competitive basis from applicants interested in conducting original research in the Du Bois Papers and other SCUA collections. The criteria for selection will include the potential of the proposal to contribute to scholarship; its fit with Du Boisian themes; the need for the use of SCUA’s collections; and a letter of support.  The application will consist of a brief (up to three pages) description of the research project, curriculum vitae, and the letter of support.  At the end of their consecutive four-week residency, fellows will deliver a public talk on their research.

Call for Applications – Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Germany Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München will award up to 10 Research Fellowships to excellent junior academics in 2012. The “LMU Research Fellowships” are an integral part of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, aimed at recruiting excellent early-career postdocs. Candidates from all fields of research who have completed their doctoral studies with outstanding results within the last three years may apply. The fellowships are tenable for two years.

Deadline for applications is February 5, 2012.
