Get ready to rally behind our Wildcats this week as the men’s basketball team gears up for the BIG EAST Tournament! As a flashback in the spirit of the season, above is the front cover of the media guide for the 1968-1969 basketball season. These guides, utilized by various media outlets, provided valuable insights into the team and the upcoming season. This historical team was ranked 10th in the final AP poll of the season, boasting an impressive 21-5 record. (They lost in the First Round of the NCAA tournament versus Davidson.)

In this year’s tournament, Villanova, seeded 6th, plays against 11th seed DePaul on Wednesday, March 13 at 9 p.m. Sporting a 17-14 record, our Wildcats promise to make this March Madness season an interesting one.

Tune in to support our team during the most thrilling time of the year for college basketball!

Thank you, Coach Wright.

Thank you for the wonderful memories these past 21 years. Thank you for your dedication to Villanova basketball and the Villanova community.

Over the past few days, many have commented on Coach Wright’s legacy; just ask Jessica Bianchi ’20, who quantified Wright’s greatness in her honors thesis for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. ‘Nova Nation is thankful for Coach Wright’s leadership and attitude—both on and off the basketball court. His values and principles have had a lasting impact on all Villanovans, inspiring us to be leaders in our own lives.

As the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, Villanova President, says, “Jay taught us all the true meaning of attitude.” That mindset will stay with us all, whether we’re playing for a team, learning in the classroom, or upholding Villanova’s Augustinian tradition.

Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.

On March 15, the NCAA tournament will begin and March Madness will officially be underway. As we Villanovans know very well, our beloved Wildcats have had great success in two of the last three NCAA tournaments: winning the championship in 2018, and making the Sweet 16 last season.

Since 2001, Hall of Famer Jay Wright has and continues to build his program around the motto “We Play for Those Who Came Before Us.” This week’s TBT follows Coach Wright’s motto and takes us back to a photograph of the 1942-1943 Villanova Men’s Basketball Team, which qualified for the Final Four in the inaugural NCAA tournament four years earlier.

While the shorts may be shorter and the shoes less flashy, the 1942-1943 team and this year’s team have both played their part in helping Villanova become a basketball powerhouse.
