Happy World Book Day and Shakespeare Day

""

Happy World Book Day and Shakespeare Day! To celebrate the Bard’s many contributions to culture and language, we wanted to share this striking edition that is contained in our physical collection. While the collection indeed contains several of Shakespeare’s first folios, rest assured, friends, they are but mere facsimiles: valued for research, but not nearly as valuable!

Photo Friday: Happy National Library Week!

Falvey Library Staff in Zoom Meeting

Happy National Library Week! To celebrate, and to mark National Library Workers Day on April 6, we wanted to show off the many faces that make Falvey the friendly place it is.

Whether remote or in-person, Falvey’s committed staff always goes “the extra aisle” to make sure students and faculty find the right book, journal, or even microfilm needed. So, if you happen by the virtual desk or start a virtual chat with a librarian, remember to tell them “thanks!” (Except for Will D. Cat, who is only an honorary staff member.)

Read more about the amazing Library staff in the new issue of Mosaic, the Library’s news and events publication!

Photo Friday: A Blessed Easter to All

Easter Poster

“God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” – Saint Augustine

A blessed Easter to Villanovans around the world. To celebrate this joyous season, we decided to revisit the Easter exhibit from 2013, “I Am the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25): An Easter Celebration from Special Collections.”

Visual. Intellectual. Spiritual.

The exhibit was designed by Laura Bang, ‎Distinctive Collections Librarian; she and Michael Foight, Director of Distinctive Collections and Digital Engagement, mounted the exhibit; and Joanne Quinn, Director of Communications and Marketing, created posters and other graphics.

Photo Friday: Reading, Writing, Relaxing

student Chris Bondoc in a hammock

We caught up with senior College of Engineering Student Chris Bondoc “chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool” (to quote Will Smith) in a hammock near the Library. The Tampa, Fla., native won’t be wanting for sunshine today!

Foto Friday: The Songbirds are Singing

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –
And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –
I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.

A Golden-crowned Kinglet stopped to sing a song at Falvey Library.

Photo Friday: Happy First Week of Classes!

By Shawn Proctor

One week into classes on campus, and it’s heartwarming to see all of the friendly half-faces and know that underneath those thousands of masks are thousands of smiles. On Sunday, we caught up with one of the amazing counselors that make Villanova Orientation a special tradition.

She was kind enough to pause in the rain for a Photo Friday snap and tell us about her Falvey Favorite spot!

“While I love all of the resources and study spots in the Library, I have to shout-out the Writing Center. The one-on-one structure of tutorials guarantees an individualized, valuable experience for all student writers. As a tutor and Undergraduate Assistant at the Center myself, this second-floor destination holds a special place in my heart. :)”

Photo Friday: Reading is Not Canceled

Students Reading in Old Falvey

Just a reminder, no matter whether you’re wrapped up in blankets with your favorite story, sussing out the deep meanings in St. Augustine’s Confessions for your class, or studying a textbook in Old Falvey (as seen here), reading is not canceled.

So, after you text to check in with your friends and family, try self-isolating with your favorite book this weekend.

Shawn Proctor, MFA, Communication and Marketing Program Manager at Falvey Memorial Library, is currently reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (audiobook version, via the Libby app.)
