TBT: “Twinkles in Their Eyes”

Image courtesy of the Villanova Digital Library (Bell Air 1964, p. 166)

Villanova’s 2024 Winter Gala has concluded, and students will now wait another year to dress up and take some pictures in Driscoll all while freezing in their suits, dresses, and heels in the chilly Pennsylvania weather.

Today’s TBT features a Junior Week formal from 1964. Would you wear any of these styles? Don’t forget, vintage styles are making a comeback! Maybe keep some inspiration in your back pocket for next year’s Gala.

Now that this Winter Gala is over, students are forced to face a long two weeks before they can bask in the relief of spring break, which is coming up after classes end on March 1. We hope that for those who attended the Winter Gala this past weekend, you enjoyed every minute with your friends dancing on the floor and saw “twinkles in their eyes and glows on their faces,” and that those memories will hold you over these next two weeks (and until the Winter Gala next year!)

Happy Thursday!

Happy first official week of school, Wildcats!

Although we’re sad to leave summer behind us, we are so happy to have you back for the 2023 fall semester! Today’s #TBT is a page from the 1957 edition of the Belle Air Yearbook detailing how Villanovans of the 1950s spent their time in school. Isn’t it funny how “Studies, sports, and bull sessions” have been a central part of Villanova’s campus culture since the 50s? It’s safe to say not much has changed! What are you looking forward to doing back on campus?

Wishing you the best start of the semester,

Your Falvey Communication & Marketing Team

Isabel Choi ’26, Communication & Marketing Student Assistant at Falvey Library.

Foto Friday: Trust No 1

“If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized, or easily referenced.” Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), The X-Files: Fight the Future

Fox Mulder was right! Well, that depends on your thoughts on Congress’ UFO hearing. According to of NBC News, five former military officials testified before Congress on Wed., July 26, making five main claims: “the Government is ‘absolutely’ in possession of UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena); ‘nonhuman biologics’ were found at a crash site; officials must establish a ‘safe and transparent reporting process’; stigma associated with sightings ‘silences’ possible witnesses; and a UFO was spotted accelerating to ‘supersonic speeds’.”

Villanova had its own Astronomical Society. From the Belle Air 1969 (p. 109), “A program of films and lectures, operation of the Tolentine observatory’s ten inch Schmidt Cassegrain telescope, and participation in the Symposium on the Natural Sciences were among the many activities conducted this year by the members of the Astronomical Society.”

Maybe they saw some UAPs. Do you WANT to believe? Whatever your stance, the truth is in Falvey’s resources!

The Masters Tournament, the first of the four major championships in professional golf, aired this past Sunday. This week’s Throwback Thursday (#TBT) features the 1958 varsity golf team (three of the members are pictured above.)
