EndNote citation manager now available through Falvey

How would you like to organize all the references you’ve been accumulating during your years of research into one handy file that you can search by keyword?  Imagine never again wasting valuable time copying or downloading a citation that you already looked up once. Wouldn’t you also rather spend more time communicating the results of your research to your readers and less time worrying about how to format those pesky footnotes and bibliographies?  Well, EndNote version 8 is now available to take care of the mechanics so that you can concentrate on the communication.

A powerful and versatile software program, EndNote can create a file called a “library” on your PC. As you do your research, you enter citations into the EndNote library in any of three ways: by typing the information into a template, by importing citations that you have downloaded from one of Falvey Memorial Library’s many subscription databases, or by connecting directly to VUCat or other online university catalogs and then searching and downloading all in one step.

When composing a paper or journal submission, you then use the toolbar that EndNote places in Word to insert footnotes or parenthetical references as you type and to format your bibliography according to the standard style of your discipline or the more specific style of your target journal.

The EndNote library stores and organizes citations to just about any type of resource: books, journal articles, dissertations, patents, conference proceedings, online documents, artworks, government publications and more. Fields are provided for the required elements of each resource, such as conference name or patent application number.

Members of the Villanova University community who have a valid LDAP username and password may go to the EndNote support page to download a copy of the program onto a campus-located Windows PC (This restriction is dictated by licensing terms). The Mac version of the program is available by contacting Barbara Quintiliano.

While learning EndNote requires an initial investment of time on your part, you may recognize it as time well spent, as many Villanova University community members who have already used this program can attest. Once you’ve used EndNote, you’ll wonder, like many other researchers, how you ever lived without it.
