#TBT: Celebrating America’s Independence
THROWBACK THURSDAY
In honor of the Fourth of July, we’d like to highlight a recent exciting addition to Falvey’s Digital Library: The Centennial Record of Portland, Maine.
On the cover of volume one, issue three from March of 1876, there’s a depiction of the signing of the Declaration of Independence from 100 years prior–July of 1776. Below, you’ll also notice pictures of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Faneuil Hall as well as the list of the 13 colonies that adopted the Declaration of Independence.
Feeling festive? Be sure to check out some of the other volumes of The Centennial Record in our Digital Library for a closer look into America’s past.
On behalf Falvey Memorial Library, please have a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday!
Regina Duffy is Communication and Marketing Program Manager at Falvey Memorial Library.

Doesn’t Falvey Hall still have the “Sister Bell” somewhere on the 2nd floor? Why no mention of it online… anywhere that I can see? Is it a secret? Can the public visit it? It still is, after all, as authentic as the State House (aka Liberty) Bell that cracked (which itself was re-cast twice after it broke), and the 2nd attempt by Lester & Pack of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry to cast a decent sounding ringer. Please do tell. You guys have a piece of real history in your midst! (And I’d like to see it please.)
Hi, Phil! It’s still on campus, but is now housed in the Heritage Room. We wrote a post about it in the past: https://blog.library.villanova.edu/2014/07/31/throwback-thursday-the-sister-bell-or-the-villanova-bell/ Are there additional members of the Radnor Historical Society who are interested in seeing it?
