I’m Daniella Snyder, a first-year graduate student at Villanova University, and your newest ‘Cat in Falvey Library’s Stacks. I’ll be posting about academics– from research to study habits and everything in between– and how the Falvey Library can play a large role in your success here on campus!

I can’t tell if it’s daylight savings, midterms, or just lack of sleep, but I’m definitely in a funk. Even though I have three papers due, all I want to do is curl up on my couch, eat pizza, and watch the entire new season of Queer Eye. So, this week I want to offer everyone some tips and tricks to get out of our funks so that we can finish the semester strong! Good luck, Wildcats!

Get more sunlight.

Medical experts recommend 10-30 mins of direct sunlight exposure three or four times a week. Further, they recommend midday sunlight, when the sunlight is most direct and effective. This week, eat lunch outside with your friends, or take the longer walk to class.

Exercise regularly.

For the millionth time, get outside, get to the gym, break a sweat. Your mind & body will thank you!

Self-care is a huge part to fighting the mid-semester blues. This means getting a full night’s sleep, eating (and eating well!), showering regularly.

Combat seasonal depression.

According to CNN, time changes could increase seasonal depression. Thankfully, the National Institute of Mental Health has four main treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):

  • Medication & Psychotherapy: While the NMH recommends certain medications, I advise you to visit the Counseling Center on campus to figure out what’s best for you.
  • Light therapy: Natural sunlight is obviously best, but a “light box” or “SAD lamp” can do the trick too!
  • Vitamin D: Most seafood is rich in Vitamin D, along with milk (cow and soy), and of course, orange juice! Allergic? Be sure to take Vitamin D supplements.

Take care of yourself.

Self-care is a huge part to fighting the mid-semester blues. This means:

  • Get a full night’s sleep.
  • Eat– and eat well!
  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Take time to relax, watch tv, and spend time with friends at least once a day.
