Falvey’s Fall Events Preview

As summer comes to a close, Falvey is ready to welcome Wildcats back to campus for the fall 2018 semester.

With our 24/7 Wildcard-accessible spaces, research help, printers, database access, books and Interlibrary Loan services—we are more than ready. While we want to be the place you can always count on for academic support, we also want to be the place where faculty, staff and students can connect and share ideas outside of the classroom. One way we bring people and ideas together is by offering a variety of events, across all disciplines. Events range from formal (i.e. faculty lectures, panels) to the more leisurely in nature (i.e. stress relief, game club, film screenings).

Some highlights this semester include the following:

Film Screening of 13th
September 13 at 3:30 pm, Villanova Room, Connelly Center
This 2016 documentary by Ava DuVernay offers an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals our nation’s history of racial inequality. The faculty discussant is Prof. Maghan Keita (History Department and Africana Studies Program).

One Book Villanova Author’s Visit
September 14 at 4:00 pm in the Villanova Room, Connelly Center
Bryan Stevenson, Founder and Director of Equal Justice Initiative will visit campus to speak about his book, Just Mercy, the 2018 One Book for Villanova.

Mannella Lecture feat. Claudia Consolati on “The Madwoman in Italian Cinema”
October 2 at 1:00 pm in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Memorial Library
Dr. Consolati, who teaches film history at the University of the Arts and at the University of Pennsylvania, will be giving a talk titled, “The Madwoman in Italian Cinema” as part of our annual Alfred F. Mannella and Rose T. Lauria-Mannella Endowed Distinguished Lecture series.

Faculty Panel: Mass Incarceration and Collateral Damage
October 4 at 4:00 pm in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Memorial Library
This panel will address the effects of mass incarceration on political representation, on poverty, on children and families, and on us as a society. Participants include Professors Robert DeFina, Lance Hannon, Jill McCorkel, and Briana Remster (Sociology and Criminology Department).

Scholarship@Villanova talk feat. Luca Cottini, PhD on his book, The Art of Objects
October 29 at 4:30 pm in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Memorial Library
The Art of Objects explores the experimental encounter of arts and industry in Italy at the turn of the 20th century, tracing the origins of the Italian culture of design in the social and aesthetic construction of the age’s most iconic industrial objects.

Panel: The Graterford Program
November 1, at 4:00 pm in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Memorial Library
This panel will provide of glimpse into Villanova’s Graterford Program from different perspectives. The State Correctional Institution at Graterford is Pennsylvania’s largest maximum security prison; Villanova’s program is one of the oldest, continuously running, degree granting prison education programs in the country. Participants include two Villanova graduates from the Graterford program, a VU faculty member who’s taught in the program, a VU undergrad who volunteers in the program, and the Director of the Graterford Program.

Villanova Community Author Event: Tom Sexton ’65 CLAS on the “Seven Principles Essential to Team Formation in Sports and In Life”
November 13 at 7:00 pm in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Memorial Library
Tom Sexton ’65 CLAS will share the “Seven Principles Essential to Team Formation in Sports and In Life” and discuss why some teams come together and function more smoothly and more effectively than others.
