With summer quickly coming to a close, we are looking forward to all of the “fall” things coming our way: hoodies, football, pumpkin spice lattes and the chance to snuggle up and read some good books. But, which books to choose? Falvey can recommend two inspirational books for you to read in the coming weeks: a book by a former One Book Villanova author, Renya Grande titled A Dream Called Home as well as this years’ One Book Villanova selection, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson.

Grande, author of the award-winning memoir, The Distance Between Us visited Villanova in 2015 and gave the keynote address at the University’s St. Thomas of Villanova celebration. Her book describes her experience as a child left behind in Mexico and her difficulty in adjusting to a new life in the United States. You can view her talk via Villanova’s YouTube Channel. Grande’s new book, A Dream Called Home continues where The Distance Between Us story leaves off and describes Grande’s journey as a first-generation Latina university student and aspiring writer who is unwavering in her mission to build a new life for her family in a new country. A Dream Called Home will be available for purchase starting on October 2!

A Dream Called Home, Reyna Grande, One Book author

Bryan Stevenson’s book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption has been chosen as the campus One Book selection for the 2018-2019 academic year. Just Mercy, a New York Times best seller, is a true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us and a call criminal justice s for the reform of our criminal justice system. The book highlights Stevenson’s account of his career as an advocate for marginalized people who have been either falsely convicted or harshly sentenced through a legal practice he founded, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). It also details his involvement in working with Walter McMillian, a black man wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to death in Alabama in the late 1980’s.

Remember to mark your calendars as Villanova University will welcome Bryan Stevenson to campus on Friday, September 14th at 4:00 pm in the Villanova Room as a part of our annual One Book Villanova Lecture during the St. Thomas of Villanova Celebration. As part of the festivities, we will have a themed dinner prepared by our Villanova’s Dining Services as well as a book signing. Books for faculty, staff, students, families and friends are $8.00 and now available for purchase on Villanovatix.com or by visiting the Office of Student Involvement in room 108 Dougherty Hall. Limited copies are available to borrow with a valid Wildcard at Falvey. Or, you could choose to support the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) by purchasing a copy of Just Mercy via Amazon Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/

These are two books we are looking forward to digging into this fall. In search of more books for your reading list? See here for a list of past One Book selections.
