#FalveyIncludes: Visit the Diversity & Inclusion Subject Guide During Pride Month

New York City – August 18, 2007: Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, site of the June 1969 Stonewall Riots that commenced the Gay Liberation movement

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT+ Pride Month) is celebrated each June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots which occurred in 1969 in New York City. This five-day uprising against police harassment by LGBT+ community members is acknowledged as the moment of coalescence of united protest against the discrimination of homosexuals and the birth of the gay rights movement. The anniversary is marked each year by pride parades, picnics, workshops and historical tributes, as well as respect for those lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS.

We’d like to take this time to remind the Villanova community of the opportunity to read and help contribute to Falvey Library’s new Diversity and Inclusion Subject Guide.

Diversity and Inclusion Guide

The Diversity and Inclusion Resource Guide developed out of a competition held annually by the Institute of Creativity and Entrepreneurship. In the fall of 2016, the ICE posed the question: “How would you create an inclusive community that represents all perspectives of a 21st-century community?” As participants in the challenge, and in accordance with the values and mission of the library, the Communication and Marketing Department here at Falvey proposed the creation of the guide. With the funding of the ICE and the expertise already available on our own staff, construction of the page began. We believe that construction of this resource can never be completed. The Diversity and Inclusion guide is very much a living document. We hope that as the world continues to change around us, this guide will adapt and continue to inspire conversation and curiosity.

The LGBTQ+ Community at Villanova is active, welcoming, and committed to fostering inclusion on campus. By focusing on visibility and action, we have seen steady growth in support from students and faculty, both as allies and members of the LGBTQ+ Community. Villanova has supported and encouraged the creation of a safe environment for LGBTQ+ students to gather and share experiences, whether in a confidential setting or in a more open setting with friends and allies.
