March Forth with Falvey

The Library’s namesake, the Rev. Daniel P. Falvey, OSA, PhD, would be celebrating his 112th birthday on March 4 if he were still alive today. This date is very fitting as Fr. Falvey, who served as head librarian from 1940-1962, played a pivotal role in helping the Library to “march forth” with his proactive approach to leadership. From being a driving force to unify the physical collection to his fundraising efforts to facilitating the creation of a modern building (now known as “Falvey Hall”) for Villanova, he was always focused on the continued growth of the Library. In honor of Father Falvey and all that he accomplished during his tenure, the Library continues to “march forth” into greater things and do our part to ignite change at Villanova.

In fact, Falvey Memorial Library is excited to share that it is currently embarking on several new exciting projects and initiatives.

This semester, we are eager to unveil our new Diversity and Inclusion Resource Guide, which is a web page that will make resources related to diversity and inclusion accessible to the Villanova community. The guide was inspired by a project Falvey’s Communication and Marketing department participated in from the ICE Institute and is led by Graduate Assistant, William Repetto, MA ‘18 and Sarah Wingo, English and Theatre librarian. The guide will serve as a place to explore a vast range of social, political sexual, racial and gendered issues in today’s world. It will also provide the opportunity to engage with voices, ideas and stories both familiar and new. We want to offer the community a page by, for and about underrepresented voices. We will be launching the web page at a reception in Speakers’ Corner at 4:00 p.m. on March 14th. Be sure to join as you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the page, hear from Terry Nance, PhD, Associate Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Chief Diversity Officer, and listen as various student organizations share information about their multicultural/service groups.

Among other library projects, Falvey’s Technology department is working with the Web Committee to improve the design and functionality of the Library’s website. They are hoping to have a prototype ready for testing and review at some point this spring, though they are uncertain of when the new website will officially roll out, since in the timeline may be influenced by the major upcoming university-level website updates. Please stay tuned for more information about this project.

Falvey is also proud to be able to present the Scholarly Open Access Reserve (SOAR) fund, which enhances access to scholarship for all by underwriting the article processing fees charged by open access journals. In 2017-18 nine Villanova faculty members publishing in well respected and prestigious open access journals since June 2017. Through this fund we have been able to support faculty from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Villanova School of Business, The M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing and the College of Engineering.

Along with the new projects we’ve mentioned, Falvey also plans to hold events in celebration of the innovative research and scholarship happening at Villanova; cutting edge work which is being performed at all levels and across all disciplines. On Monday, April 23, we will honor faculty at our Outstanding Research Award event (we have two winners whom are yet to be announced!); on Thursday, April 19, we plan to celebrate the publication of CONCEPT: Villanova University’s Interdisciplinary Journal of Graduate Studies. Editors, authors and peer-reviewers involved in the project will be honored for their contributions. Finally, we will be holding our annual Falvey Scholars Program on April 27 to honor several remarkable undergraduate students who have excelled in their field of research.
