’Cat in the Stacks: ’Tis the Season

CAT-STAX4I’m William Repetto, a second-year graduate student at Villanova University. This is the “‘Cat in the Stacks” column. I’m your ‘cat. I’ll be posting about college life, about learning and growing here at Villanova, and, of course, about the Falvey Memorial Library’s role.

’Tis the holiday season, ’Nova Nation! And you know what that means; it’s time for giving. You might expect me to now tell you all the ways that giving to ’Nova enhances the student experience (etc., etc.,), but I’m going to take it a couple steps further in this week’s column. The holiday season gives us the chance to give on all levels – as humans, as students, and, yes, as Wildcats.

First, the bad new: we still have finals week!

I must start with a Bah Humbug! For students the holiday season brings about finals week, or alternatively, it brings about those dreaded due dates for term papers. My advice remains the same though; give, give all you got! Most of us will cruise into a couple weeks of break after these final long nights of study. Breaks feel somehow much better when you can kick your feet up and wait for those A-plus grades to keep rolling

Giving it all you got at the end of the semester will inspire you to give to others during the holiday season. I come from a Catholic background, so we celebrate Christmas back at the ole ’Cat in the Stacks household. Giving always makes me feel one thousand times better than receiving. Seeing the smiles on the faces of friends and family when you’ve really found that present that means a lot to them, OR, even when you’ve just given some of your free time for a quick chat can make me smile brighter than anything.

Lastly, of course, it’s a good time of year to give back to ’Nova. This year’s 1842 Day showed us just how willing our students, parents, and alumni are to give back to the university. There are those Falvey-centric donations you could make, but check out the sweet ornaments the university used to celebrate #GivingTuesday earlier this week:

The period after Thanksgiving always seems to me a period during which we move from giving thanks in the abstract to giving back our time, our efforts and everything else to both the special people in our lives and work/education we’ve dedicated our lives to. What is your favorite part of the giving season, ’Nova Nation? Let us know in the comments below or via Twitter and Facebook!

Here’s Hunter, in a much more pleasant mood than me!
