Dr. Spencer M. Di Scala speaks at this year’s Mannella Lecture.

The generosity of Villanova University alumnus Alfred S. Mannella has made it possible for Falvey Memorial Library to sponsor a series of annual events, focusing on scholarship about Italian-American history, culture, and the immigrant experience. During this year’sĀ Alfred F. Mannella and Rose T. Lauria-Mannella Endowed Distinguished Speaker Series lecture, Dr. Spencer M. Di Scala, essentially an encyclopedia on WWI Italy, spoke about Italian-American relations leading up to the outbreak of war.

The lessons, as he made clear, were applicable to world events beyond simply the United States and Italy and beyond only the early 20th century. He asserted, “The image of a country can be influenced by particular stories that are false… as students, we have to be very careful about these myths. We have to look into the details and discern how these things come up.”
