Content Roundup – Third week – January 2017
Newly digitized – and with the Presidential Inauguration of the 45th President this week, take a timely look at the Presidential signature of Andrew Jackson, another populist president, on the Certificate of appointment of Isaac McConihe as the new Deputy Postmaster of Troy New York. Still another Presidential signature – U.S. Grant – graces a military commission! Other materials include a postcard featuring the image of the most famous bird in 19th century America, “Old Abe” – Old Abe, was the eagle mascot for the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War; the mascot was carried into battle with the regiment; on the rear side is a drawing of Old Abe perched on a shield with the American stars and stripes painted on it. The card certifies that the Old Abe Centennial Portrait printed by J.O. Barrett is really Old Abe. “Sold with the Eagle’s History, by J.O. Barrett . . . for the ‘Old Abe Museum of Ornithology.'” Signature believed to be that of the sitting governor for Wisconsin, Harrison Ludington. And don’t leave now, but check on some very rare Dime Novels and Story Paper issues! Finally 2 long audio lectures from the Philadelphia Ceili Group, one featuring the contributions of Douglas Hyde to the Irish Literary Renaissance and the other on the Irish songs and singers of Newfoundland. Strap in, as we speed up with even more new content next week!
