Reading Room Renovation: Old Falvey Lobby
Although the renovation of the Reading Room has been well publicized, visitors entering the Reading Room through Old Falvey/Falvey Hall will be pleasantly surprised with the appearance of the lobby which leads into the Reading Room, although this is not shown in the architects’ renditions of the Reading Room.
A bright new lobby is being created. Along one wall, opposite the entrance to the Director’s Office, will be lounge chairs with tablet arms; there are multiple outlets already in place for students’ use. On the other side with the entrance to the Director’s Office, where there were niches with cushioned seats, one niche now houses a hydration station and the other a built-in wastebasket/recycling bin. Walls are newly painted; chair rails and baseboards are installed. The hanging lights have been removed and the room is now well lit by indirect lighting.
The newly refurbished lobby will create an appropriate entrance to the renovated Reading Room and the CAVE and also provide study space for students. The CAVE, which opened in 2014, is a virtual reality facility providing viewers with an immersive 3D experience. The Cave, administered by the Center of Excellence in Enterprise Technology (CEER) and directed by Frank Klassner, PhD, is housed in Falvey to provide it with a central location.
