2016 Literary Festival & Ida B. Wells Lecture featuring Asali Solomon, PhD. Dr. Solomon is the author of the novel Disgruntled.  She received a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award for her stories collected in Get Down, her first book; the volume was also a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. In 2007 she was named one of the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35.” Dr. Solomon teaches English at Haverford College. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and two sons.

SS United States—the Most Famous Ship that Didn’t Sink: Today!                                                                                   Susan Gibbs, executive director of the SS United States Conservancy, will speak on the history of the great liner, designed by her grandfather, William Francis Gibbs, that achieved the fastest transatlantic speed of any passenger ship ever April 6, 4:30 p.m., Connelly Center Cinema. Ms. Gibbs will also discuss the plans to return the ship to full time service as covered recently in the New York Times, CBS News, and other major media outlets. Questions? Contact: Alexander Varias

This week in Villanova history. “Dance Marathon demands spirit and drive” – headline in The Villanovan, Vol. 66, No. 18, April 5, 1991, p. 17. The first annual 24-hour dance marathon, from 7 pm on March 22 until 7 pm March 23, was held in the Jake Nevin Field House. Inspired by Penn State’s Thon, Villanova’s had 58 participants and raised $3,800 for Special Olympics.”
