Alfred F. Mannella and Rose T. Lauria-Mannella Endowed Distinguished Speaker Series Lecture. April 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Speakers’ Corner, Falvey Memorial Library.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Speakers’ Corner of Falvey Memorial Library for the Alfred F. Mannella and Rose T. Lauria-Mannella Endowed Distinguished Speaker Series lecture featuring Richard N. Juliani, PhD.

Dr. Juliani is a Villanova University retired Sociology professor. He has titled his talk, “The Forgotten War: Little Italy in World War I.” The presentation will focus on Italy in the Great War, the American role on the Italian Front, and particularly the participation of Philadelphia’s immigrants in the Italian army against the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany and as members of the U.S. Army with the Allies on the Western Front.  Along with examining Little Italy as a distinctive homefront during the course of the war, we shall also consider the long term consequences for the assimilation of Italians in Philadelphia and America.

This is the second time Dr. Juliani will be speaking as part of the event series. He was the first official speaker in 2009 when the Mannella series began.

Light refreshments will be served.

This event, sponsored by Falvey Memorial Library, is free and open to the public.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today is April Fool’s Day. Do you know the origins of April Fools’ Day? Well, you can read this TIME article! But did you know that one (controversial) origin is connected to Geoffrey Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales? “The line in question is ’32 March,’ which was thought to be a joke because there is no March 32, but there are some medievalists who claim it was a misprint” [source]. Misprint or not (editors note: I prefer to think Chaucer was a funny dude and intended the 32!), it’s a mighty good story – and not dissimilar to the March 31st joke from Parks and Recreation (for those in the know, as it were).

That said, today is April Fools’–double check your sources on those craaaaazy stories today! Any burning April Fools’ confusion can be sorted out by our lovely subject librarians. Seriously. They know everything. And they’re quite proficient in Google-fu when they don’t.

“April 1. This is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other three hundred and sixty-four.”Mark Twain
