Microfinance in Madagascar, Africa & the Middle East: 1/25
On Monday, Jan. 25, 4:30–5:30 p.m., in Bartley 2011, Tom Shaw, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) senior technical advisor for Microfinance, will share his experience developing and delivering several unique models of microfinance–including an Islamic savings group model–in Madagascar and other parts of Africa and in the Middle East. He’s happy to discuss job opportunities in international development and with CRS.

VLS Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: 1/26 and 1/28
Villanova University School of Law will mark its annual commemoration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with two events as part of a University-wide celebration. On Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 4:30-6 p.m., the Law School presents its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture, sponsored by Pepper Hamilton LLP. This year’s featured speaker Yasser Payne, associate professor of Black American Studies at the University of Delaware, will talk on “School-to-Prison Pipeline in the 21st Century: Understanding the Educational Experiences of The Streets of Black America.” On Thursday, Jan. 28, 4-6 p.m., the Law School will host a screening of “Pull of Gravity,” a documentary that follows three North Philadelphia men in different stages of reentry from prison to society.

Center for Business Analytics Practitioner Lecture – “Sport Analytics – Applied Research on Performance, Development and Injury Prevention” by Jo Clubb, Applied Sports Scientist, Buffalo Sabres Jo Clubb is currently an Applied Sports Scientist in the Performance Department at the Buffalo Sabres NHL team. Previously, she worked in English football for five years with the Chelsea Football Club and a year at Brighton and Hove Albion. Jo graduated from Loughborough University with a First Class Honours Degree in Sport and Exercise Science and is currently pursuing a distance learning Masters Degree in High Performance Sport from Australian Catholic University. Art Exhibit Opens. Are you aware that Villanova University has its own art gallery on campus? The gallery is on the second floor of Connelly Center. The latest exhibit, “Russian America – The Alaskan Native Spiritual Legacy,” opens Friday, Jan. 22, with a reception from 5-7 pm. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. If you miss the opening, the exhibit will continue through May 16.

800 YEARS OF WRITING…

We’re loving 10 over 75: A Reading List of the Old and Wise that LitHub published yesterday. Triggered by the release this month of Herman Wouk‘s 24th book, Sailor and Fiddler: Reflections of a 100-Year Old Author, the list celebrates recent works of authors who are all over the age of 75. The post is very inspirational, and as its author Bethanne Patrick asserts, proves that “artistic drive doesn’t necessarily wane as years pass.” Find a nice assortment of Wouk’s works and more in our catalog.
