The 8:30 | Things to Know Before You Go (9/4)

EIGHT-THIRTY-GRAPHIC2

Here’s your daily dose of library-oriented speed-reads to start your day!

TODAY IN THE LIBRARY…

In celebration of World Meeting of Families 2015 and Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia, Falvey Memorial Library invites you to celebrate your family by sharing a family photo. There are two ways to participate: 1.) Bring in a copy of your favorite family photo and hang it on the library display window. 2.) Post your family photo on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram with the hashtag #falveyfamily and we’ll hang it for you. Please note, submission of a photo implies your permission to use images on library social media accounts, displays, and publications. Provide copies and not originals as photos displayed will not be returned.

If you would like the opportunity to take home the large sign of our Pope Francis display as a commemorative souvenir of the 2015 World Meeting of Families, please fill out a ticket with your name and contact email (available near the display). For a second entry, enter a family photo to be included in our display. (For remote participants, hashtag your photo #falveyfamily.) The random drawing will be held in November, when the display is dismantled.

Did you know—

There’s plenty to do near Villanova this weekend. One free event offers farm-fresh local produce: the Bryn Mawr Farmers’ Market, Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Held in Bryn Mawr’s Municipal Lot 7, Lancaster Ave. at Morris Ave. (between the Bryn Mawr Train Station and Ludington Library), it’s just two stops away from the Villanova train station or a 1.7 mile walk along Lancaster Ave.

NEW MEDIA NEWS

It’s going to be a long weekend. Why not stock up on some good viewing material? The History Channel produced Little Ice Age: Big Chill a few years ago, but we just added it to Falvey’s DVD collection. The History Channel website tells us the Little Ice Age “took over the Earth and the livelihood of all those who inhabit it.” This sounds a little like science fiction, but they further explain “its scientific properties, its natural causes, the people it affected and specific examples of areas it decimated.”

Sounds perfect for Labor Day weekend.

ATTENTION RETRO CAMERA FANS!

Interested in a little past-future hybridity in your photography? Yesterday, Polaroid announced its Snap Instant Digital Camera! Its coolest feature? Instead of ink, this camera prints using heat to activate crystals in the paper – a technology called “zero ink.” The device also has SD storage to allow for online uploads in addition to classic prints. “The result is full-color, high quality, long-lasting and smudge-proof images without ink cartridges, ribbons or toner,” Polaroid said.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Beyonce Knowles is 33 today. Speaking of things that number in the thirties, a quick Google search of reveals that Beyonce has had over 30 Billboard hits – how far over? Well, at least enough to have an article written about her “30 biggest.” Case in point, Beyonce has pop chops. She is, truly, everywhere. But some of today’s college generation will remember her most fondly for her time in Destiny’s Child. Say my name, say my name.

Beyonce – good study music or no? The urge to dance is far too strong.

“I can never be safe; I always try and go against the grain. As soon as I accomplish one thing, I just set a higher goal. That’s how I’ve gotten to where I am.” – Beyonce Knowles

HAVE A GREAT DAY!
