EIGHT-THIRTY-GRAPHIC2

Here’s your daily dose of library-oriented speed-reads to start your day!

TODAY IN THE LIBRARY…

Resume Review Day. 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. in room 205. Recruiters from local businesses will be available to critique resumes and perform mock one-on-one interviews with students. Questions? Contact: maureen.piotti@villanova.edu

SAVE THE DATE…

Changing Landscapes: People and Place in the Mill Creek Valley, Lower Merion c.1870-c.1920. Monday, Sept. 14 at 3:00 p.m. in room 204. In spring 2015, ten junior-year students participating in a research seminar with the Department of History undertook a group project to examine how the farms and mills of the Mill Creek Valley transformed into the familiar residential properties of today. Each student chose a property from an atlas published in 1877, traced that property’s development over time, and reconstructed the lives of the inhabitants. Working alongside Digital Humanities staff in Falvey Memorial Library, students constructed an interactive website to communicate their research. Come join us for the website launch! Questions? Contact: laura.bang@villanova.edu

In celebration of World Meeting of Families 2015 and Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia Falvey Memorial Library invites you to celebrate your family by sharing a family photo. There are two ways to participate. 1.) Bring in a copy of your favorite family photo and hang it on the library display window. 2.) Post your family photo on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram with the hashtag #falveyfamily and we’ll hang it for you. Please note, submission of a photo implies your permission to use images on library social media accounts, displays, and publications. Provide copies and not originals as photos displayed will not be returned.

Did you know—

many scholarly articles are not discoverable by Google? Peer-reviewed articles from
scholarly journals are usually available only by a fee or through a database subscription. Fortunately, Villanova students do not have to pay for these services because Falvey subscribes to over 250 academic journal databases.

To start, simply type your search words into the box located at the top of any library page. Falvey’s powerful search engine searches the library’s academic journal databases, and it lists your results under “Articles & More.”

dreamland japanNEW BOOKS NEWS

This book crossed our path quite accidentally when a student offered to replace the library’s copy that had gone missing while in his possession. Dreamland Japan: writings on modern Manga isn’t a new book. It was originally published in 1996, but the new copy is a 2011 Collector’s Edition. It’s been reviewed 532 times on Goodreads since 2008. Dreamland Japan was intended as a sequel to Manga! Manga!, a book that virtually became “the “bible” from which all studies and appreciation of manga” began (according to Amazon).
