The Post-doctoral Fellowships at German Universities and Research
Institutes are provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the
Volkswagen Foundation in close cooperation with the Freiburg Institute
for Advanced Studies, the Berliner Zentrum Moderner Orient, the National
Museums in Berlin, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, the
Lichtenberg-Kolleg in Göttingen, the German National Library in
Frankfurt, the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, the German
Archive of Literature in Marbach, and the Center of Excellence in
Konstanz. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will fund up to 12 American
post-docs in the humanities spending a year at academic institutions in
Germany.

The fellowships are granted for 9 – 12 months and aim at supporting
post-doctoral studies at the above-mentioned universities and institutes
as well as at universities or research institutes of the candidate’s
choice.

The respective target group are promising young scholars in their
post-doctoral research phase based at American institutions who want to
strengthen their research capacity in a specific field of the humanities
which can be expected to have a strong impact on their individual
research profile and expertise. Scholars who work in an
interdisciplinary field are especially encouraged to apply. The
applicants should have finished their Ph. D. between one and no more
than five years ago. Candidates who apply for a fellowship at an
institution not listed above will have to provide a letter by the
institution of their choice stating that it will support the candidate’s
application and host the person during the respective academy year.

The deadline is January 31, 2012.

Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT. Assistant Professor, tenure track position, beginning fall semester 2012. Ph.D. expected. 4 courses per semester. AOS: Open. AOC: History of Philosophy. Department has needs in the teaching of introductory courses, especially critical thinking, as well as philosophy of gender or race, philosophy of education and other areas in applied philosophy. We are a pluralistic department with a strong commitment to the history of philosophy.

We are seeking a candidate who is able to teach an introductory critical thinking course and to help cover courses in our history of philosophy sequence (ancient, medieval and renaissance, early modern, 19th century, as well as various 20th century courses). Tenure-Track Position, starting August 2012. Rank: Asst./Assoc. Area of specialization: history of philosophy (one or more historical periods). Area of competence is open.

Required qualifications: A completed PhD in philosophy and, depending on rank, further research experience; a strong publication record; a willingness and ability to apply for Dutch and/or European grants for research projects; excellent didactic qualities.

The Faculty of Philosophy is a vibrant, international community of excellent lecturers and researchers. It consistently receives the highest evaluations both for research and for teaching among philosophy departments in the Netherlands.

The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience in accordance with the Dutch university system: asst: from € 3,195 to a max. of € 4,970 euro gross per month; assoc.: from € 3,872 to a max. of € 5,920 euro gross per month.
