The 8:30 | Things to Know Before You Go (11/11)

EIGHT-THIRTY-GRAPHIC2

Here’s your daily dose of library-oriented speed-reads to start your day!

VETDAY

This Veterans Day, we would like to thank all of our Villanova community veterans and those who serve. In addition to thanking our veterans, we’d like to acknowledge that yesterday marked the 240th birthday of the Marine Corps, and both the Army and Navy turn 240 this year, as well – all three branches were founded in 1775.

TODAY IN THE LIBRARY…

Veteran’s Day Gathering and Celebration. 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the Falvey Hall Lobby. Questions? Contact: Angela Heinbach

SAVE THE DATE…

Tomorrow! Reception for James & Kathryn Murphy. Thursday, November 12 at 4:30 p.m. in Speakers’ Corner. Please join us as we celebrate James and Kathryn Murphy’s planned donation of 300 signed, first-edition Irish poetry books to the Library.

The event marks the unique contributions the Murphys have made to Irish studies and also Villanova’s long standing connection with leading Irish writers, such as Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, Paul Muldoon and Ciaran Carson. Award-winning poet and former Heimbold Chair, Moya Cannon, will present readings.

DID YOU KNOW—

All University publications, both print and online, adhere to AP style. To be consistent with University publications, Falvey’s online and print publications also adhere to AP style (see FML Style Guidelines).

AP Style evolved so as to fit the maximum amount of words in a space. That goal is the reason for the following:

The Oxford CommaIn a series of three or more items (example—Falvey offers many titles by Richard Wright, Alice Walker and Langston Hughes.), omit the comma before the conjunction (aka The Oxford Comma).

POTUS WANTS TO BE YOUR FRIEND…

…on Facebook, that is! Citing that three out of four adults online use the service, the President has taken to using USA’s #1 social media platform to share his favorite issues, thoughts – and even some “just-for-fun” stuff, too. Guess we can soon expect lots of cute pics of Bo and Sunny and requests for Candy Crush lives!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

On this day in 1922, author Kurt Vonnegut was born. Best known for his novel Slaughterhouse-Five, a satirical work with elements of science-fiction and a shade of autobiography, Vonnegut also wrote Cat’s Cradle, as well as thirteen other novels, three collections of short stories, five plays, and five non-fiction books.

“And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, ‘If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.’” – from A Man Without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

If you have ideas for inclusion in The 8:30 or to Library News in general, you’re invited to send them to joanne.quinn@villanova.edu.
