2015 Falvey Scholars Awards Presentation & Reception Ceremony: 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Room 205. At this event, Falvey Scholars award recipients will give short presentations on the content and findings of the research involved in the writing of the thesis or in the creation of the project report. Presentations will be followed with a closing by University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, ’75 CLAS in which he will focus attention on the importance of both undergraduate and graduate research on campus. He will also highlight another significant event concerning the recognition and celebration of student research—the Sigma Xi Research 2015 event, which will take place in the Connelly Center immediately following Falvey Scholars. Falvey Scholars attendees will be invited to visit Connelly for the Sigma Xi event. Villanova Electronic Enthusiasts Club Meeting: 2:30 p.m., First Floor Lounge. Join the VEEC (aka game club) most Fridays during the semester from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the first-floor lounge for some fun! The VEEC is a social club, focused on recreation and relaxation. Participants gather once a week to play video games in a safe and fun environment. THAT NEW BOOK SMELL: NEW HOLDINGS AT FALVEY

Francis, repair my church is written by John Edgar Raub, who was a Catholic priest for 10 years and a monk for 28 years. He left the monastery in 2000 to return to parish life and has since been married for 14 years. His book, according to one reviewer, is “a sensitive call for reform and renewal in the Catholic church today.”

EBOOK WEEK

Green Press Initiative (GPI) is a non-profit program which takes a collaborative approach towards working with publishers, printers, paper manufacturers and others in the book and newspaper industries to minimize social and environmental impacts, including impacts on endangered forests, impacts on climate change, and impacts on communities where paper fiber is sourced. According to the organization, paper production requires large quantities of energy, making it the fourth largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.

In commemoration of the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, celebrated this year on Wednesday, April 22, we will feature an ebook, one of hundreds of thousands available to Falvey patrons. User interface, licensing polices and access varies from publisher to publisher – and we’re the first to admit that it can be confusing – so feel free to contact a librarian when you need help navigating or downloading any e-resources you find in our catalog.

In order to access ebooks, enter your desired search terms as usual. When your results are returned, go to the “Refine Search” function in the right column, and click the “Internet” choice. This will then return only digitally accessible items.

Today’s ebook is Cotton: The Fabric that Made the Modern World by Giorgio Riello.  This is a fascinating and insightful story which ranges from Asian and European technologies and African slavery to cotton plantations in the Americas and consumer desires across the globe.
