Forum on open access issues in journal publication

UnknownTo acknowledge Open Access Week and respond to researchers’ growing pressures related to the dissemination and eventual disposition of the products of their scholarship, Falvey Memorial Library and the Office of Research and Graduate Programs will host the second of three open forums today for Villanova faculty, researchers and students. This afternoon’s event, Open Access Issues in Journal Publication, will be moderated by faculty and library facilitators and will focus on Villanova’s response to issues of the cost of journal publication and the emergence of open access journals. The forum is scheduled for 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Connelly Center Cinema.

University Librarian Nik Fogle, PhD, will talk about the state of academic publishing, open access (OA) and the librarian perspective; Aaron Bauer, PhD, professor and Gerald M. Lemole Endowed Chair in integrative biology will give a faculty perspective on the issues related to academic publishing and OA; Interim Library Director Darren Poley will talk about the efforts Falvey has made to encourage OA academic publishing; and Professor John-Paul Spiro, fellow, Villanova Center for Liberal Education will talk about editing an OA academic journal with the Library as publisher. Al Ortega, PhD, associate vice president for research and graduate programs and James R. Birle Professor of Energy Technology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will close the program by moderating an open faculty discussion of the topic of OA and academic journal publishing.

The first forum, held on Sept. 16, witnessed lively discussion on data management plans as the proper archiving and management of scholarly research output. New federal requirementsnow mandate such data management plans. A third forum will be held next month—Nov. 11 at 3:30-5:30 p.m.—titled An Institutional Repository for Villanova Scholarship and Data. This event will also take place in the Connelly Center Cinema.

The Villanova community is encouraged to participate in the forums. Registration is not required.
