Outreach librarian and Events and Outreach team leader Darren G. Poley, MA, MS, was promoted to Library Professional III, effective June 1.

An undergraduate alumnus of Gettysburg College, he represented Villanova University at the inauguration of Gettysburg’s new president, Janet Morgan Riggs, Ph.D., September 12.

Poley has been a librarian in Falvey Memorial Library for over ten years and teaches as an adjunct faculty member in the theology and religious studies department.

Bartley Business Information Center, a branch location of Falvey Memorial Library, can be found in Room 1005, Bartley Hall. The center is a convenient location for VSB students to get expert assistance with their business research problems. It is staffed Monday through Thursday by librarians and MBAs: (left to right) Merrill Stein, Dennis Lambert and Linda Hauck.

Bring your Villanova University Wildcard: to enter the library, to check out books, DVDs, CDs, library laptops and reserve readings, to use a group study room, to print, and much more…

Use the public computers for research, word processing, e-mail and other applications. Other helpful services include wireless connectivity, printing, photocopying, scanning and the library print center.

Need a late night place to study? Try the after-hours 24/7 study lounge. When the library is closed, enter by swiping your Wildcard at the exterior lounge door.

Check out the library catalog for print and web holdings: books, magazines, DVDs and videotapes, audio books, current bestsellers and more.

Where are the books? There are three floors of circulating books. Library materials have Library of Congress (LC) call numbers, not Dewey Decimal, so items are shelved alphabetically by the first letters of the call number, and then numerically (LA229.P34).

Where are the magazines, newspapers and journals? Toward the back of the main floor and shelved by LC classification. Many are online, so check the library catalog. Ask us if you need help finding articles on a topic.

Can’t find what you need? Use E-ZBorrow and interlibrary loan to borrow items not owned by Falvey (free of charge).

Need a good job? Falvey employs students in many departments, such as events, circulation, stacks management, interlibrary loan, course reserves and resource management. Call 610-519-4291 or stop by the Director’s Office on the 2nd floor.

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition, is now available at the library. Consultation copies are located at the Information Desk and in the Reference Collection, and one copy is available for borrowing.

Keep in style with these new Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association resources:

* -Learn the basics from APA’s tutorial.

* -APA now has a blog! Post questions and read more about APA style.

* -Manage your citations: RefWorks has updated its software. Access RefWorks at the library home page.

* -Manage your citations: EndNote promises a revised output style soon. To install EndNote on an off-campus computer, come to the Falvey front desk and borrow a CD to take home for 3 days.

RefWorks Library Workshop

Please set up a RefWorks account by clicking on the “Sign up for an Individual Account” link before you come to the workshop and download Write-N-Cite if you bring your personal laptop.

You will learn how to

• — export references from catalogs, indexes, and digital collections,
• — edit references,
• — create folders for different projects,
• — create references from scratch in RefWorks,
• — cite in Microsoft Word with Write-N-Cite (Chicago style).

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) makes it easy to search your favorite social science databases simultaneously.  Simply click on the Specific Databases link below the search boxes and select from Sociological Abstracts, Criminal Justice Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, NCJRS Abstracts, ERIC, PsycINFO, and Communication Abstracts. Next click on Continue to Search and your selection will be listed on the search page under Now Selected: Multiple Databases. Search results will be clearly identified by database of origin. Since not all these research databases use the same subject thesaurus, it is best to avoid subject (descriptor) searches while cross searching multiple databases.

Other helpful features are the export to RefWorks and the QuickBib options. Both can be found by clicking on the Save, Print, Email link from the results screen. QuickBib will format selected records into the citation style of your choice in a matter of seconds.

For more bells and whistles set up a My Research account with CSA. You can find a link in the upper right hand corner of the CSA interface. My Research is your gateway to research alerts via e-mail or RSS feed, a customized search interface, and groups of preferred databases. You can also save unlimited search results and search histories to your My Research account. The price? One more login and password to remember.
