I love the 44 Scotland Street series by Alexander McCall Smith. If you enjoy quirkly little characters and lighthearted drama these are great books for a day on the beach or an afternoon at home with a cup of tea.
Straight Man by Richard Russo if you are interested in a rather interesting take on academic politics.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. It was recommended to me by one of my teachers last semester and if you have any interest in philosophy its a must read in my opinion. Also, you don’t need to know anything about motorcycles so don’t let the title deter you!

I would recommend the following two books, which I found to be excellent: Bing West – The Strongest Tribe, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. These two I have not read yet, but captured my interest: Viktor Suvorov – The Chief Culprit: Stalin’s Grand Design to Start World War II, and Victor Davis Hanson – The Soul of Battle.
I decided to go with some American classics this summer. Right now I am finishing up “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
I definitely recommend it.
Lolita – Vladimir Nabokov
White Teeth & On Beauty – Zadie Smith
Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol. A hilarious satire in which the protagonist goes around the 19th century Russian countryside buying the titles to deceased peasants from landowners.
Right now I am ensconced in The story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski, a coming-of-age story that involves a boy and a fictional breed of dogs in northern Wisconsin. So far, a great read!
Someone mentioned To Kill A Mockingbird and I complete agree with this! Its a must read!
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay is an excellent read for anyone to enjoy
