The Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora, a new online resource, is an authoritative source for information on the people, places and events of the African Diaspora, spanning five continents and five centuries. In the last 500 years, African people have continuously established communities across the globe. Their adaptations to new cultures and the changes they brought about in their new lands—political, economic and cultural—are the subject of this exhaustive encyclopedia. On Oct. 1, Catherine Wilson, Ph.D., discussed “Competing for the Latino Vote” in light of the current U.S. presidential election. Her presentation was the second of four in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election series sponsored by Falvey Memorial Library. The event also kicked off Hispanic Cultural Heritage Month at Villanova University.
In her talk, she focused on the need to understand the political behavior of Latinos and their involvement in the elections. As the largest minority in the United States, Latinos are fast becoming a key voting population to which current and future presidential candidates will need to be more attentive. Drawing from her recently published book, The Politics of Latino Faith: Religion, Identity and Urban Community, Dr. Wilson discussed the importance of Latinos’ political involvement in the United States.
Dr. Wilson teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in American government, immigration politics, effective nonprofit management, and religion and politics. Her research interests pertain to issues of religion and politics, Latino politics, immigration politics, and nonprofits and social service delivery. Dr. Wilson is an assistant professor in the department of political science and the Center for Liberal Education. She is also the nonprofit course coordinator of the Master of Public Administration program.

Michael Foight, Teri Ann Pirone and their Digital Library staff received special thanks in the Radnor Township and School District 2008-2009 Calendar for scanning historic documents belonging to the Memorial Library of Radnor Township. The Digital Library project celebrates 200 years of the Radnor library’s history.
Susan Markley, Resource Management team leader, and Merrill Stein, Assessment team leader, presented “All Hands on Deck: Providing New Staff Opportunities in a Matrix Environment” on Nov. 12, at the Academic Library Reorganization session at the Pennsylvania Library Association’s Annual Conference, Valley Forge (Pa.). Their presentation covered Falvey Memorial Library’s move from a traditional department hierarchy to a matrix management organization consisting of teams. They discussed how the service desk was reorganized; they also addressed the present operation and subsequent challenges encountered in the matrix system.
Joe Lucia, Library Director, announced that there are PALINET podcasts on the library catalog, available from the PALINET web site . These podcasts focus on the new VuFind software used in the library catalog and feature sessions with himself, Andrew Nagy and Chris Barr, and with four librarians, Jackie Mirabile, David Burke, Barbara Quintiliano and Linda Hauck. Joe serves as president of the PALINET board of trustees.

Have you ever wondered who creates the fascinating drawings and caricatures on the whiteboard behind the circulation desk? Joanne Quinn, Access and User Assistance technician, is the artist responsible. It all began when Luisa Cywinski, the AUA team leader, asked her to create something for Balloon Day, April 15. From then on, Joanne has been using dry-erase markers to create whiteboard illustrations with topics appropriate to the particular day.
