Jonathan P. Doh, Ph.D., will discuss his recent research on the role of multinational enterprise, governments, and nongovernmental organization on the process and outcomes of development, as part of the Endowed Chair Lecture series.

Dr. Doh, professor of management and operations at the Villanova School of Business, will review the recent developments related to the changing balance of global economic influence and the emergence of developing countries as major players in the world economy.

This featured talk will take place on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 1:00 p.m. in Falvey Memorial Library’s first floor lounge.

In the past, human societies across the globe established economic ties with neighboring countries. Lately, the pace of global integration has significantly increased and has encompassed a range of social, political and economic changes. Dr. Doh will conclude with some implications of his research findings for public policy, corporate strategy and civil society. (more…)

Using the Lifestyle Market Analyst was de rigueur for every single student that took Management Essentials, a core course in the previous Villanova School of Business curriculum.  Because this reference book was in such great demand, it was held at the front desk of the library, so we knew VSB students were visiting Falvey, and often. With the advent of the new VSB curriculum, Management Essentials is no longer offered. Would this mean demand for the Lifestyle Market Analyst would evaporate and, with it, VSB students at Falvey?

The new VSB curriculum is as rigorous as the previous one.  Students taking VSB 2020, Competitive Effectiveness, have an even greater need for a reference work providing market, lifestyle and consumer profiles, but they no longer need to check out the print Lifestyle Market Analyst. It’s the week before midterms and you have to find a book for a paper that is due in a few days. You’ve always liked Jack Kerouac and were hoping to find The Subterraneans on the shelf. You like the way Kerouac weaves together reality and fiction and this has inspired you to write your paper in the same fashion. Unfortunately, you find that the library’s print copy is checked out.

You approach the desk to ask the librarian for help. She checks the catalog, but isn’t able to find another print copy. Suddenly, she has an idea! She suggests downloading Kerouac’s book to the library’s Kindle e-reader for you. Having never used a Kindle, you’re not sure how it works, but in the spirit of Kerouac, your adventurous nature urges you to give it a try.

The above story is true, based on a student’s real need that led to his discovery of the Kindle. Similar stories have been reported by Bartley patrons. The 14-day loan period gives patrons time to read the books and incorporate their findings into a research project or paper. The device is light (about the weight of a Kerouac paperback novel).

If you came to love the free beta SourceOECD with it’s fabulous access to international statistics, books and reports and mourned it’s loss when free access was terminated, have we got good news for you! Falvey Memorial Library has been able to subscribe to the full compliment of SourceOECD resources.

OECDStat (the statistical component) is an interactive database of comparable international data on everything from aid to welfare. Both OECD and non-OECD country data are often included. The time series data are customizable and downloadable to Excel or text files for statistical packages. This resource is ideal for students working on theses and faculty research with global comparative components.

Over two dozen periodicals published by the OECD are available in full text. Many of the articles in these periodicals are indexed elsewhere in article databases such as EconLit, ABI Inform, and PAIS International. Periodical titles are also discoverable from our catalog or E-Journals by Title.

All of the books and working papers published by the OECD since 1998 are also included in our subscription. Students of geography, public policy and economics will find a wealth of information and analysis here. OECD country studies cover everything from taxation to social issues, technology and industry. Stand alone comparitive studies on controversial topics such as health care delivery, migration policy, genetic testing, work and family life balance, educational finance policy, corporate social responsibility and urban redevelopment to name a few will be helpful for persuasive papers and presentations. The thousands of OECD books included in the collection can not be found in our catalog, there are only available via the SourceOECD database.

We’re hoping that this resource will become a favorite for freshmen and faculty alike. SourceOECD is available in it’s entirety via Databases A-Z, and select Subject pages. Let us know what you think!

MRI+ is an outstanding research tool every marketing major will want to add to his or her toolbox.  Based on a national consumer survey this database allows you to generate reports on user demographics and media exposure keyed to products.  Product summary reports can also be used to calculate market share by user or volume consumed for product catagories or brands.

Before you get started with MRI+, you need to create an individual user name and password with your Villanova email address.  This resource is only compatible with the Internet Explorer browser (sorry Firefox and Safari users).

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics aspires to be the “definitive scholarly reference work for a new generation of economists.” Given the caliber of its contributors and scope of the encyclopedic articles included, this resource should be the first stop for undergraduates and researchers looking for orientation to and context for unfamiliar economics topics. Faculty members’ pedagogical goals may be well served by assigning articles from this source as supplementary reading. This encyclopedia contains almost 2000 articles and will be updated quarterly. It is browsable by JEL topics or alphabetically and supports simple keyword searching.

Gale Directory Library: Encyclopedia of  Business Information Sources is a research guide for business topics.  Use it to identify the handbooks, manuals, encyclopedias, article databases, statistical sources, periodicals and trade and professional associations for industries and issues important to doing business in the US.

Dissertations & Theses Full Text (ProQuest)  (1861- ; Full Text 1997 - )

A comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses with over 2.4 million dissertations and theses included from around the world. Each dissertation published since July 1980 includes a 350-word abstract written by the author. Master’s theses published since 1988 include 150-word abstracts. Bibliographic citations are available for dissertations dating from 1637, and more than 65,000 new citations are added to the database every year. Where available, PQDT provides 24 Page Previews of dissertations and theses. In addition, nearly one million are available for download in PDF format. (Digital dissertations and theses are archived as submitted by the degree-granting institution. Some will be Native PDF, some PDF Image).
